Concert in Jelenia Góra – 01.05.2012

On May 1st, 2012, Michał and his band gave a concert as part of the XXXIX Spring of Cieplice, a series of events organized in Jelenia Góra under the patronage of the Cieplick Cultural Centre. Full of expression, the show attracted numerous visitors to Piastowski Square; fans and supporters from all over Poland, the residents and holidaymakers who spend their time in the beautiful surroundings of the Jeleniogórska Valley.

The concert in Jelenia Góra will remain in my memory for a long time. Up until that moment, it was the best Michał’s concert I’ve ever had the pleasure to be part of.

The weather was exceptionally good that day. By midday, the big stage was already prepared for the 6pm show when Michał and the band were going to perform. The first group of fans arrived from all over Poland from places such as Warsaw, Cracow or Szczecin. As time went on, the crowd at Piastowski Square grew more and more. At approximately 2pm, the boys form the band arrived to start a rehearsal playing tunes such as “Kolorowa Szarość” and “Rewolucja”. Michał joined them about an hour later and performed “Venus”, and earlier he greeted the fans gathered at the stage.
The concert began shortly after 6pm, when a large crowd gathered around the stage. At the beginning, you could hear the familiar announcement of Michał’s performance. Shortly after, the band came up on stage; Kamil (guitars), Mariusz (bass guitar), Maciek (bass guitar) and Leszek (drums). Following the instrumental intro, Michał appeared singing “Rewolucja”. During the chorus the united fans released red helium balloons.
I have the impression that Michał had endless energy that day. The concert was definitely not long enough. The whole show was very good, it was evident the boys were prepared well. It was cohesive, no unnecessary breaks and no mistakes. The audience had a lot of fun, taking cue from Michał himself who went crazy on stage, jumping and rolling around. His spontaneous choreography, made a big impression as usual. He even came down from the stage, dancing and having fun with the fans crowded in front rows.
Michał sang four songs from the “XI” EP – “Revolution”, “I have to run”, “Pretty Baby” and “Sensual”. They had new rock arrangements and in my opinion, they sounded even better than on the album. There were also songs from Whiplash days – “Carpe diem,” “Time,” “Color of Greed,” and “Surprise,” as well as Scorpions’ “Hurricane”, Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way”, Eric Clapton’s “Tears In Heaven, as well as known from earlier concerts Guns’n’Roses’, “Sweet Child O’mine” and of course Czeslaw Niemen’s “Strange is this World”.
The concert lasted well over an hour because Michał gave an encore performance of “Carpe Diem” and nevereding “Sensual”. He came back moments later to give autographs. The organisers were giving out large posters which he also signed. There were many interested fans; small children shouting his name, teenagers and adults. One image in particular stuck in my mind; a 4-year-old girl was leaving very happy, holding Michał’s autograph close to her chest.
There are no words to adequately describe how brilliant this concert was. Michał gave it all – energy, madness, fun joy and emotion. His vocals were in top form. It is amazing how incredibly well he works with his band, without which, it would not be the same. There is a kind of symbiosis between them, an understanding which is the result of their friendly relationship also on a personal level. The exchange of energy between Michał and the audience. He drew it from us and we from him. It was a really unforgettable evening, and another was coming in two days! Thankfully!
